LAS VEGAS - The trip to school should be the safest part of a kid's day. In Clark County, it hasn't been. On September 22, 2026, [Ash Watkins](https://samandashlaw.com/about/ash-watkins/), co-founder of Sam & Ash Injury Law, joined [KTNV Channel 13's Morning Blend](https://www.ktnv.com/morningblend/sam-ash-injury-law-9-22-26) to explain what parents and drivers need to know now that students are back on the roads.

## The numbers behind the new law

Last school year, 427 Clark County students were struck by vehicles while traveling to or from school. More than 130 of those incidents involved e-bikes or scooters, and the median rider age was just 12. E-bike crashes rose significantly from the year before. Drivers were found at fault in 52% of reported accidents.

## What changed for drivers on July 1

Under Nevada's new school-zone law, [Assembly Bill 6](https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/NELIS/REL/36th2025Special/Bill/12995/Overview), certain violations in an active school zone now carry double the fines and double the demerit points. The law took effect July 1, 2026. Covered violations include:

Speeding

Using a phone that isn't hands-free

Making an illegal U-turn

Failing to yield to pedestrians (including bike and scooter riders)

## E-bike safety starts before the first ride

Helmet on, every ride.

Scout the route together before your child rides it alone.

## If your child is hurt

Get your child emergency medical attention.

Ask police to respond and create an official report.

Photograph the scene and the vehicle damage.

Gather witness information and the driver's details.

Schedule a medical evaluation once you're home, even if your child seems fine.

Just as important is what not to do. Be cautious about giving a formal statement to an insurance company or accepting an early settlement. Some injuries aren't fully apparent right away, and a quick offer usually arrives before anyone knows what recovery will really cost.
