A rear spoiler on 74,578 Dodge Durangos that can work itself loose and leave the roof at highway speed. Shock absorber oil reservoirs on 48,280 Toyota Tacomas that can corrode off the truck and land in a travel lane. A driveshaft coupling on nearly 28,000 BMWs that wears until the rear wheels stop getting power - and, in rare cases, until a parked car rolls. Thirteen BMW X3s where the steering wheel may not be firmly connected to anything that steers. And 149 Nissan Altimas built with bolts meant for a pickup truck holding the passenger airbag in place.

Here's the framing that gives it weight: The AAA Foundation's most recent [road debris study](https://aaafoundation.org/research/the-safety-impact-of-road-debris-updated-prevalences-of-crashes-injuries-and-deaths-in-the-united-states-2018-2023/) put debris behind an estimated 319,724 crashes, 32,802 injuries, and 433 deaths across a six-year span - roughly 53,000 crashes a year. The detail that matters most: while about 90% of debris crashes involve a vehicle striking or being struck by something, nearly half of the deaths came from drivers who crashed while swerving to avoid it.

## The Week's Biggest: 74,578 Dodge Durangos Recalled for Spoilers That Can Come Off - for the Third Time

### 2021-2023 Dodge Durango: Rear Spoiler May Detach While Driving (NHTSA #26V528 / Chrysler 61D)

Chrysler is recalling 74,578 model year 2021-2023 Dodge Durango SUVs because the rear spoiler sits too high relative to the roof. Every time the liftgate opens or closes, the spoiler's leading edge can strike the roof panel. Do that a few hundred times and you get [paint abrasion, degraded mounting clips, and stress fracturing](https://www.autoevolution.com/news/dodge-durango-rear-spoiler-recall-expanded-74k-vehicles-affected-274471.html) - and eventually a spoiler that normal highway airflow can rip off the vehicle entirely.

The part that should make you angry is the history. This is the third federal campaign on this defect. Chrysler filed the first one in October 2021 covering roughly 4,800 trucks. It filed a second in early 2023 that [expanded coverage to more than 139,000 SUVs](https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-recalls-defects/dodge-durango-recalled-spoilers-could-detach-while-driving-a9282850706) across the 2021-2023 model years. Now, in 2026, here we are again.

And this is critical: previous repairs do not exempt your truck. The new filing explicitly states that Durangos already serviced under the 2021 or 2023 campaigns still require the latest remedy. If a dealer replaced your spoiler two years ago, run your VIN anyway.

The recall spans the entire Durango range, from base Pentastar V6 models up through the 392 and Hellcat. Affected trucks were built at Jefferson North.

## Toyota Recalls 48,280 Tacomas Because a Shock Absorber Part Can Fall Into Traffic

### 2024-2025 Toyota Tacoma & 2024 Tacoma Hybrid: Shock Absorber Oil Reservoirs May Detach (NHTSA #26V514 / Toyota 26TB14, 26TA14)

Toyota is recalling 48,280 pickups, concentrated in [MY2024-2025 Tacoma TRD Off-Road trims](https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-recalls-certain-model-year-2024-2025-tacoma-vehicles/), because the external oil reservoir on the front and rear shock absorbers can separate from the truck.

Here's the mechanism, and it's worth understanding. The reservoir attaches to the shock via a welded metal flange. Toyota's filing explains that [untreated metal surfaces between the flange, reservoir, and shock can corrode as moisture works in](https://www.5newsonline.com/article/news/nation-world/toyota-recalls-tacoma-oil-reservoir-faulty/507-b20b3750-eaa6-4e1f-ab40-950086b514e5), and that corrosion buildup creates an expanding force against the welds until they fail. In some cases the reservoir comes off the shock completely.

This is not framed as a ride-quality problem, and you shouldn't read it as one. NHTSA's stated risk is a road hazard - a metal component landing in a live lane. The person most exposed isn't the Tacoma owner. It's whoever is behind them on the 15 at 70 mph.

Toyota received its first two reports of a leaking shock in September 2025. Dealer inspection on one truck found the left rear shock leaking and its reservoir simply gone. By the time the campaign was filed, Toyota had logged 20 field reports and 62 warranty claims. No crashes or injuries were reported in the filing.

What to do: Dealers will inspect the front and rear shock absorber assemblies and replace them with improved-design units as necessary, free of charge. ## BMW Recalls 27,720 Sedans and Coupes: Rear Wheels May Lose Power - or the Car May Roll

### 2021-2023 540i/540i xDrive/M550i, 2022-2026 840i/840i xDrive, 2024-2026 750e xDrive: Driveshaft Damage May Cause Loss of Rear-Wheel Power (NHTSA #26V525)

BMW is recalling 27,720 vehicles because the connection between the driveshaft and the rear axle differential can wear excessively over time. That joint is what carries torque from the transmission to the rear wheels. When it degrades enough, [the engine can be running and the transmission in gear while the car loses the ability to move itself](https://my.prostreetonline.com/2026/08/21/bmw-driveshaft-differential-recall-26v525/).

There's a second failure mode that deserves your full attention. According to the filing, a damaged connection [may also allow the vehicle to roll away if the parking brake isn't applied when it's in Park](https://www.abc27.com/news/top-stories/bmw-recalls-thousands-of-vehicles-for-this-reason/). Park is a mechanical hold on the driveline. If the driveline is compromised, Park may not be holding what you think it's holding - on a Vegas parking garage ramp or a hillside driveway in the Hollywood Hills, that's a runaway vehicle with nobody in it.

The company first noticed rising drivetrain failure reports in the field in December 2024 and opened an engineering investigation the following quarter, examining high-mileage components through a parts return program.

## Only 13 Vehicles - and BMW Is Telling Those Owners Not to Drive

Thirteen. That's the entire recall population. And it's on this list because of what the defect is.

BMW is recalling 13 X3 SUVs because the steering spindle - the shaft linking the steering column to the steering rack - [may have been attached to the column outside factory specification](https://www.carscoops.com/2026/08/bmw-x3-recall-steering/). If that joint lets go, the steering wheel turns and the front wheels don't. Regulators classify that as loss of steering control, which is exactly what it sounds like.

BMW's own advisory to those 13 owners is blunt: don't drive the vehicle, and park it outside rather than in a garage. Two independent outlets have reported [the same do-not-drive guidance](https://www.bmwblog.com/2026/08/18/bmw-x3-steering-spindle-recall/) from the company. When a manufacturer tells thirteen customers to stop driving, it is not hedging.

How this was found is a small lesson in speaking up. On July 15, 2026, a customer outside the U.S. told a dealer their X3's steering wheel felt unusually light - it turned with barely any resistance. Inspection found no damage. Lab analysis of the part came back clean. ## 149 Nissan Altimas Built With Truck Bolts Holding the Passenger Airbag

### 2025 Nissan Altima: Air Bags May Not Deploy Properly (NHTSA #26V526)

Nissan is recalling 149 model year 2025 Altima sedans because an assembly technician [inadvertently selected fasteners designated for another vehicle line](https://carbuzz.com/nissan-altima-recall-frontier-airbag-bolts/) - the Frontier pickup, built at the same Canton, Mississippi plant. The wrong hex bolts were used to mount the front passenger airbag and the front passenger knee airbag.

They were the right thread. They appear to have been the right length. They were not the right part. Nissan's testing found the incorrect fasteners may not maintain the required load-carrying capacity if yielding occurs during airbag deployment - meaning the airbag could shift as it fires, or deploy improperly, increasing injury risk in a crash.

Small campaign, absolute defect. A technician at the plant caught the problem in December 2025. Nissan audited 96 Altimas sitting in the plant yard. All 96 had the wrong bolts. The company spent the first half of 2026 testing whether it mattered, concluded it might, and recalled every affected car rather than gamble.

Only trucks with the enhanced towing option (RPO NHT) and the 20-inch accessory tire-and-wheel package (RPO REM). The [label states 70 psi for the rear tires when the correct pressure is 80](https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/08/chevy-silverado-hd-gmc-sierra-hd-recalled-for-incorrect-tire-pressure/) - a 10-psi shortfall under a heavy trailer, in August heat, is how sidewalls fail. 2026 Ford Explorer - Engine Rod Bearing Failure (#26V532). Six vehicles. Ford's investigators traced ten replaced engines to crankshafts built at Dearborn Engine Plant [within the same roughly 30-minute window after a polishing shoe was replaced](https://www.autoblog.com/news/2026-ford-explorer-recall-ecoboost-failures), and plant data showed a measurement shift for crank pin #2 during that window. Affected 2.3-liter EcoBoost engines can seize a connecting rod bearing, causing engine failure and loss of drive power. Ford: 1-866-436-7332.

2026 Rossmonster Skye, Baja & Havn Motorcoaches - Printed Circuit Board May Overheat (#26V538). 85 units with certain MaxxAir N-Series Maxxfan rooftop ventilation fans. A PCB that fails and overheats is a fire risk in a vehicle people sleep in.

## This Week for Motorcycle Riders: No New Campaigns - But This Is a Debris Week, and Debris Is a Rider's Problem

Straight answer: no new motorcycle recalls were filed with NHTSA this week. We'd rather tell you that than invent a section.

Don't skip this, though, because the theme of this week's docket lands hardest on riders. [In 2024, 6,228 motorcyclists were killed - 16% of all traffic fatalities](https://www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/motorcycles), and riders absorb that share while making up a sliver of registered vehicles and miles traveled.

Now think about what got filed this week from a rider's seat. A shock absorber reservoir that separates from a Tacoma. A spoiler that leaves a Durango's roof at 70. A suspension knuckle that can crack on a Range Rover. In a car, hitting a fist-sized piece of steel is a bad noise, a bent rim, maybe an insurance claim. On a bike, it's a front wheel deflection you have no time to correct.

And remember what the AAA research found about how people die in debris crashes: nearly half of the deaths involved a driver who crashed while swerving. That's a car driver making a panic move in your lane, in your gap, with no idea you were there.

Practical version: widen your following distance behind pickups and SUVs, especially in the right lanes where highway debris collects. Scan the pavement two or three car-lengths out, not just the bumper in front of you. Assume the driver ahead will swerve without warning if something appears in the road - and give yourself the room to be wrong about where they'll go.

What happened with the Nissan Altima airbag bolts?

An assembly technician at Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant selected hex bolts designated for the Frontier pickup line and used them to mount the front passenger airbag and front passenger knee airbag in 149 model year 2025 Altimas. Nissan's testing found the incorrect fasteners may not maintain the required load-carrying capacity if yielding occurs during deployment, which could cause the airbag to move or deploy improperly. Dealers will install four correct fasteners per vehicle free of charge, with owner letters beginning September 25, 2026.

Were any motorcycles recalled this week?

No. No new motorcycle campaigns were filed with NHTSA this week. Several older rider campaigns remain open and unrepaired for most owners, including the Honda CMX300/CMX500/SCL500 handlebar lock screw recall (26V500, 43,913 motorcycles), the BMW S 1000 RR ignition lock recall (26V478), the Harley-Davidson airbox breather port recall (26V270, 88,039 motorcycles), and the Yamaha Ténéré 700 "do not ride" campaign. How dangerous is road debris, really?

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates road debris was a factor in 319,724 crashes, 32,802 injuries, and 433 deaths in the United States between 2018 and 2023 - roughly 53,000 crashes a year. About 90% of those crashes involved a vehicle striking or being struck by an object, but nearly half of the deaths involved a driver who crashed after swerving to avoid debris. That is why parts falling off other people's vehicles is treated as a safety defect.

Are recall repairs really free?

Yes. Under federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety recall at no charge, and any brand-authorized dealer must do the work - even if you bought the vehicle used and aren't the original owner. Safety recalls don't expire. If you already paid out of pocket for the same repair, ask the manufacturer about reimbursement and keep the receipt.

Can I still bring a claim if the recall was announced after my crash?

Possibly. A recall filed after a crash can be evidence that the defect existed when you were hurt, and the manufacturer's own Part 573 filing documents what the company knew and when it knew it. Talk to a lawyer before you sign anything or accept an insurance offer.

Chrysler's Durango file is the third one on the same spoiler. Toyota's Tacoma file logs 20 field reports and 62 warranty claims before the filing. BMW's driveshaft file traces the company's awareness back to December 2024. That's the rare category of evidence a company creates about itself - and it doesn't disappear because an adjuster would rather talk about your following distance.
