Animal Bite Force & Strength: How Powerful Animal Bites Really Are, the Injuries They Cause, What to Do, and Your Legal Options in Nevada

A focused dog interacts gently with a person, conveying warmth and connection in a serene outdoor setting.

Animal bites are far more dangerous than most people realize. A single bite can deliver crushing force, deep puncture wounds, severe infections, and life-altering injuries. In Las Vegas and across Nevada, dog bites alone send thousands of people to emergency rooms every year, and that’s just one type of animal.

This guide breaks down real bite force statistics, the types of injuries different animals can cause, exactly what to do after a bite, and your legal rights if you or a loved one was attacked.

How Strong Are Animal Bites? Real Bite Force Numbers (PSI)

Bite force is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Here’s how common animals compare:

  • Domestic Dog (average): 150-300 PSI
    • Pitbull: 235–250 PSI
    • Rottweiler: 328 PSI
    • German Shepherd: 238 PSI
    • Springer Spaniel: 150–200lbs
  • Cat: 70–200 PSI (smaller but razor-sharp teeth)
  • Human: ~162 PSI
  • Shark (great white): up to 4,000+ PSI
  • Crocodile/Alligator: 3,700–5,000+ PSI (one of the strongest on Earth)
  • Lion: ~650–1,000 PSI
  • Hyena: up to 1,100 PSI (strongest mammal bite relative to size)
  • Rattlesnakes: 30–150 PSI (often 30–50 PSI for many; sufficient to penetrate skin and inject venom, but not for crushing)

Even “friendly” dogs can generate enough force to crush bones, tear muscle, and puncture arteries. A 2025–2026 study showed that dog bites cause over 4.5 million injuries annually in the U.S., with children under 14 and seniors being most at risk.

What Kind of Injuries Can Animal Bites Cause?

Animal bites often cause more damage than just surface wounds:

  • Puncture wounds: Deep holes that trap bacteria
  • Crushing injuries: Broken bones, crushed tissue, nerve damage
  • Infections: Pasteurella, Capnocytophaga, MRSA, and rabies risk
  • Scarring & disfigurement: Especially on the face, hands, and arms
  • Psychological trauma: PTSD, anxiety, fear of animals
  • Permanent disability: Loss of function in hands, loss of fingers, chronic pain

In Nevada, dog bites are the most common animal attack we see at Sam & Ash Injury Law. Children and delivery drivers are most frequently injured. Some recent cases of dog bites and attacks in Nevada include:

  • May 2025 (Las Vegas): A two-year-old toddler was viciously attacked by a dog, sustaining facial injuries.
  • May 2025 (Nye County, Nevada): An adult female was attacked by a pit bull, suffering biceps injuries severe enough to require airlifting to Las Vegas for treatment.

What to Do After a Dog Bite in Nevada

Follow these steps quickly because every minute counts:

  1. Get away safely and call 911 if the injury is severe or bleeding heavily.
  2. Control bleeding with clean pressure (do not use a tourniquet unless life-threatening).
  3. Clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water for at least 5 minutes.
  4. Do NOT close the wound yourself. Puncture wounds need to drain to prevent infection.
  5. Seek medical care immediately, even if it looks minor. You need antibiotics, a tetanus shot, and possibly rabies treatment.
  6. Document everything: Take clear photos of the wound, the animal (if it’s safe to do so), and the scene. Get the owner’s information and contact animal control.

Your Legal Options in Nevada After an Animal Bite

Nevada dog bite law is fairly strong for bite victims:

  • Dog owners are often strictly liable if their dog bites someone who was lawfully on the property (NRS 202.500).
  • You can sue for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, scarring, and emotional distress.
  • Even if the dog has no prior bite history, the owner can still be held responsible under negligence laws.
  • Statute of limitations: 2 years from the date of the bite in Nevada.

If the animal was a dog, cat, or exotic pet, we can help you recover full compensation, often from the owner’s homeowners’ insurance.
