CCSD News: Boulder City High School Student Wins New Car in Sam & Ash Safe Teen Driving Essay Contest

River Schenk, a senior at Boulder City High School, was surprised at school with a brand-new 2025 Volkswagen Jetta 1.5T Sport after winning the grand prize in Sam & Ash Injury Law’s “What Does Safe Driving Mean to You?” essay contest.
The contest, which launched in August 2025 and closed on October 31, 2025, received more than 400 entries from Nevada students aged 16–22. Participants submitted essays reflecting on safe driving practices and their real-life importance.
River Schenk’s grand prize winning essay and video shared a personal story of losing a childhood friend in a school zone crash — the tragedy that inspired Nevada’s 2023 Rex’s Law. “River’s message really resonated with us,” said Ash Watkins, partner at Sam & Ash Injury Law. “It reminds everyone why safe driving matters so much.”
Other winners include Jazmin Castro from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who received a $5,000 scholarship, and Zaavie Broadbent from the College of Southern Nevada, who won $1,000 and a brand new 13.5” MacBook Air.
The contest was made possible through partnerships with Findlay Volkswagen Henderson, Zero Fatalities, Nevada Donor Network, Clark County School District (CCSD), and Silver State Schools Credit Union.
Sam & Ash Injury Law continues its mission to promote teen driver safety and prevent accidents across Nevada. For more information on the contest or safe driving resources, visit samandashlaw.com/safe-teen-driving-essay-contest.
