Car Recalls Of The Week: Fire Risks, Screen Failures & Safety Fixes

A serious discussion unfolds between two individuals by damaged cars, reflecting concern and accountability.

This week’s vehicle recalls impact over 400,000 vehicles nationwide. Read below to see if your vehicle is affected and to learn how to get free recall repairs.

Every week, automakers and federal safety regulators issue vehicle recalls to protect drivers, passengers, and everyone on the road from performance failures and serious safety risks. This week’s defective vehicle recalls impact over 400,000 cars and trucks across the United States, including electric SUVs, pickup trucks, and passenger vehicles. Below, we break down the most important auto recalls this week, what exactly the issues are, why it matters for driver safety, and exactly what to do if your vehicle is affected.

Volkswagen ID.4 Battery Fire Risk Recall (44,551 Vehicles)

At the top of this week’s recall list, Volkswagen has announced a recall of 44,551 ID.4 electric SUVs in the U.S. due to potential high-voltage battery fire risks. Most affected vehicles are 2023-2025 model years. In a separate but related issue, 670 additional ID.4 vehicles from 2023-2024 are being recalled because battery cell modules may have misaligned electrodes, which can lead to overheating and, in extreme cases, a fire.

To address these safety concerns, Volkswagen dealers will perform battery software updates and replace battery packs where necessary, all at no cost to owners.

What to do if you drive a Volkswagen ID.4:

  • Check your VIN using the NHTSA recall lookup tool or contact your local Volkswagen dealer
  • Follow any temporary safety guidance you may have received, such as avoiding fast charging or not charging your battery above 80%
  • Schedule your recall repair as soon as possible and DO NOT WAIT. All recall fixes are free!

Genesis and Hyundai Instrument Panel Display Recall (83,877 Vehicles)

Luxury automaker Genesis, part of Hyundai Motor Group, is recalling 83,877 vehicles due to a software logic error that can cause the instrument cluster or infotainment screen to reboot or go completely dark while driving.

When displays go blank, drivers can lose access to speed readings, navigation, warning alerts, and other critical safety information, increasing the risk and likelihood of an accident. The fix involves a software update, which can be completed at a dealership or, in some cases, remotely via an ‘over-the-air’ software update.

If you drive a Genesis or Hyundai vehicle: Check your recall status with your car’s VIN on the NHTSA website, then follow any interim instructions in the recall notice (such as temporarily disabling HD radio), and schedule an appointment at your local Genesis or Hyundai dealer to get a free software update to fix this issue.

Toyota Tundra Rearview and Multimedia Display Recall (162,000 Vehicles)

Toyota is recalling approximately 162,000 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks from the 2024-2025 model years due to a multimedia display malfunction.

The issue can cause the display screen to freeze or go blank, blocking the rearview camera image while reversing. Because backup cameras are federally required safety features, this malfunction presents a serious hazard. Toyota dealerships will resolve the issue through a free software update.

If you drive a Toyota Tundra, you know what to do: Check your VIN on the NHTSA recall database, and schedule your appointment at the dealership to have your software updated, free of charge.

Ford Engine Block Heater Fire Risk Recall (116,672 Vehicles)

Last but certainly not least, Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 116,672 vehicles. This is due to a defect in the engine block heater that may crack, leak coolant, and short-circuit, increasing the risk of an engine fire, especially when the heater is plugged in. Affected vehicles include certain Ford Escapes, Ford Focuses, and Lincoln MKCs across multiple model years. Ford dealerships will replace the faulty heater components free of charge.

What to do if you drive an affected Ford or Lincoln vehicle:

  • Stop using the engine block heater immediately
  • Check your VIN using the NHTSA recall lookup tool
  • Contact your local Ford or Lincoln dealership to schedule the free replacement repair

Vehicle recalls are issued for one reason: safety. Ignoring a recall — especially those involving fire risks, electrical failures, component malfunctions, or visibility issues — can put you, your passengers, and others on the road in serious danger. If you own one of the vehicles listed above, take action as soon as possible. Recall repairs are always free, and most fixes are quick and straightforward. Checking your VIN regularly through the NHTSA recall database is one of the simplest ways to stay informed and protect yourself. Staying proactive about recalls isn’t just about compliance. It’s about preventing accidents before they happen and making sure your vehicle is as safe as it was designed to be.
