Pool Safety: Stay in “Lifeguard Mode”
Around water, Sam’s message was direct: someone has to be watching, every second. He urged parents and hosts to stay in strict “lifeguard mode” whenever children are near a pool — no phones, no distractions, and no assuming another adult has it handled. Barriers matter just as much. Fences, self-latching gates, and pool covers add a second layer of protection for the moment attention slips, which it always eventually does.
Leftover Fireworks: Know the Law, Store Them Safely
Fireworks are one of summer’s biggest hidden hazards. In Clark County, only “safe and sane” consumer fireworks are legal, and only from June 28 through July 4 (county rules). Using fireworks outside that window is illegal, and the penalties are steep: fines start at $500 and can reach $10,000 for large quantities under 2021 Nevada law.
That’s why leftover fireworks deserve real attention. Sam cautioned that setting them off after the Fourth isn’t just dangerous — it’s against the law. Keep any unused fireworks away from heat and store them well clear of the house to avoid a fire. When in doubt, don’t light them.
