Weekly Automobile & Motorcycle Safety Recalls: May 18, 2026
At Sam and Ash Injury Law, keeping your family safe on Nevada and California roads is more than a mission — it’s personal. Every week, our automobile safety recalls blog delivers the latest vehicle safety recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and major manufacturers, so you can take action before a hidden defect becomes a life-changing injury.
Whether you’re navigating the congestion of the Las Vegas Strip, the mountain curves near Reno, or Southern California’s busy freeways, a single unrepaired recall can transform a routine drive into a devastating crash. As experienced car accident attorneys serving Nevada and California, we see firsthand what defective vehicles do to real families. That’s why we publish this weekly vehicle safety recall summary — free, updated, and written in plain language so you can act fast.
This week’s roundup includes two critical “Do Not Drive” orders you need to know about immediately.
URGENT: “Do Not Drive” Warnings — Act Immediately
General Motors — Front and/or Rear Wheels May Completely Lock Up (NHTSA #26V289)
This is the most urgent recall issued this week. General Motors has issued a “Do Not Drive” order for a wide range of its most popular trucks and SUVs after determining that a severe mechanical defect could cause one or more wheels to lock up without any warning, resulting in an immediate and total loss of vehicle control. This is not a minor issue. A wheel lockup at highway speed is catastrophic — and this defect appears across multiple model years.
Affected vehicles include:
- Cadillac Escalade & Escalade ESV — 2015, 2026
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500 — 2026
- Chevrolet Suburban — 2015, 2017–2020
- Chevrolet Suburban 1500 — 2026
- Chevrolet Tahoe — 2016–2017, 2019, 2026
- GMC Sierra 1500 — 2026
- GMC Yukon — 2019–2020, 2026
- GMC Yukon XL — 2018–2019, 2026
What you must do: Do not drive these vehicles. Contact your GM dealer immediately to ask about towing arrangements or a mobile repair option. Enter your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included.
This Week’s Full Automobile & Motorcycle Safety Recalls (May 18–25, 2026)
The following recalls were announced or have significant owner activity during the week of May 18, 2026:
Harley-Davidson Softail Motorcycles — Rear Brake Failure Risk (NHTSA #26V234) — Owner Letters Mailing This Week
Harley-Davidson has issued a second major motorcycle recall in as many weeks, and this one carries a “Do Not Drive / Park Outside” advisory. The company is recalling 16,994 model year 2025–2026 Softail motorcycles — specifically the FLHC, FXBB, FXLRS, and FXLRST models — because the rear brake line may come into contact with the Body Control Module (BCM). Over time, that contact can wear a hole in the brake line, causing brake fluid to leak and rear braking to fail. NHTSA estimates that 100% of the recalled population is affected by the defect.
Warning signs: Reduced rear brake responsiveness, visible brake fluid on the ground near the rear wheel, or a soft/spongy rear brake lever.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the BCM caddy and associated hardware at no charge. If the brake line is damaged, it will also be replaced. Owner notification letters are expected to mail between May 18 and May 25, 2026. Production units built after March 18, 2026, already incorporate the fix.
This is Harley-Davidson’s third rear brake line-related recall in recent years. If you own any of the above Softail models, stop riding immediately. Contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464 or check your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls.
Jeep Cherokee — Power Transfer Unit May Fail, Causing Loss of Drive Power (NHTSA #26V290)
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2019–2023 Jeep Cherokee SUVs because the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) may fail internally, resulting in a sudden and unexpected loss of all drive power while the vehicle is moving. Losing drive power at speed — especially on a freeway or mountain road — significantly increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and service the PTU as necessary, at no charge. Check your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls or contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
Fly Wing Snake 250 EFI Motorcycles — Brakes May Not Function Properly (NHTSA #26V293)
Taizhou Qianxin Vehicle Co. Ltd is recalling its 2024 Fly Wing Snake 250 EFI motorcycles because the braking system may not perform in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 122. A motorcycle whose brakes cannot stop the vehicle as required by federal law is a direct danger to the rider and everyone around them.
Remedy: Contact the manufacturer and check your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls. If you own one of these motorcycles, do not ride it until the brake system has been inspected and repaired.
Vespa Scooters — Missing Safety Warning Labels on Rearview Mirrors (NHTSA #26V302)
Piaggio Group Americas is recalling certain 2026 Vespa GTV 310, Primavera 150, and Primavera 50 scooters because they are missing required regulatory and safety warning labels on the rearview mirrors. While this may seem minor compared to brake or wheel failures, federal label requirements exist precisely to prevent rider confusion in emergency situations.
Remedy: Dealers will affix the required labels at no charge. Contact Piaggio or check NHTSA.gov/recalls to confirm your scooter’s status.
Micro Bird School & Transit Buses — Oil Line Fire Hazard (NHTSA #26V286 & #26V287)
Micro Bird Inc. is recalling multiple school and transit bus models because the vehicle’s oil lines may contact the drive belt pulley. That friction can wear through the lines over time, causing oil to leak onto hot engine components and creating a serious fire hazard. Affected models include:
- 2023–2025 Micro Bird G5 Transit Buses
- 2023–2026 Micro Bird G5 School Buses
- 2024 Micro Bird MB II School Buses
If your school district, municipality, or organization operates any of these buses, contact the manufacturer immediately. Children and vulnerable passengers should not be transported in unrepaired vehicles.
International HV Commercial Trucks — Delayed Brake Release Increases Stopping Distances (NHTSA #26V294)
International Motors, LLC is recalling 2026–2027 International HV commercial trucks for non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 121. A delayed service brake release can significantly increase the distance required to stop the vehicle, raising the risk of rear-end collisions — especially at highway speeds or in construction zones.
Fleet operators and commercial drivers should contact their International dealer immediately.
Forest River RVs — Toxic, Flammable Sewer Gases May Enter Cabin (NHTSA #26V295)
Forest River, Inc. is recalling the 2026 Prime Time Crusader recreational vehicle line due to a faulty waste-holding tank connection that may allow toxic and highly flammable sewer gases to vent directly into the passenger cabin. The combination of fire risk and toxic gas inhalation makes this a serious hazard for RV travelers.
Remedy: Contact your Forest River dealer or check NHTSA.gov/recalls for parts and repair availability.
Braun Corporation — Wheelchair Restraint Retractor May Not Lock (NHTSA #26V296)
Braun Corporation is recalling 2023–2026 Chrysler Pacifica modified wheelchair-accessible vehicles because the integrated wheelchair restraint retractor may fail to lock securely, leaving wheelchair passengers without proper protection in a sudden stop or collision. This is a grave safety concern for one of the most vulnerable groups of vehicle occupants.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the retractor mechanism at no charge. Contact your dealer or verify at NHTSA.gov/recalls.

How to Check & Act on a Recall — Three Simple Steps
- Look up your VIN. Go to NHTSA.gov/recalls and enter your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number. You’ll see any open recalls for your specific vehicle within seconds.
- Schedule the free repair. Contact your authorized dealer immediately. All recall repairs are legally required to be performed at no cost to you, regardless of your vehicle’s age or whether you’re the original owner.
- Document everything. Keep records of all recall-related communications, appointment dates, and completed repair confirmations. If a defect later causes an accident, this documentation can be critical to your legal claim.
Important: Do not wait for a mailed notice — especially for recalls carrying “Do Not Drive” warnings. NHTSA mailing schedules are estimates, and parts availability or postal delays mean your letter might arrive weeks after a recall is announced. The VIN tool gives you the information right now.
Were You Hurt by a Defective Vehicle?
Recalls are issued to prevent harm, but they only work if owners take action — and manufacturers don’t always make that easy. At Sam & Ash Injury Law, we represent clients who were seriously injured because a vehicle defect the manufacturer knew about wasn’t fixed in time. If you or a loved one has been hurt in an accident involving a recalled or defective vehicle, you may have a claim not just against another driver, but against the automaker itself.
As experienced car accident attorneys serving Las Vegas, Reno, and Southern California, we fight aggressively for the compensation our clients deserve — covering medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more — while handling every detail with the care and respect your family deserves.
