Nevada Laws About Speeding
Nevada’s basic rule about speeding makes it illegal to drive:
- At an unreasonable speed when considering traffic, the surface and width of the highway, weather, and other highway conditions
- At a speed that could cause injury, death, or property damage
- At a speed greater than the posted speed limit
- At a speed of greater than 80 miles per hour.
Fines levied for a speeding ticket vary from county to county and city to city throughout Nevada. By law, a ticket can cost up to $20 for each mile per hour above the posted speed limit that the ticketed driver was traveling or the speed the driver should have been traveling.
In Las Vegas, a basic speeding ticket costs the driver $208 ($113 plus court costs). Speeding fines are automatically doubled if speeding occurs in a work zone, school zone, or pedestrian safety zone. Drivers also face a fine of up to $1,000 if they cause property damage or injuries while speeding or exceeding a safe speed.

- Head-on collisions (5%)
- Sideswipes/while passing (3%)
- Other/unknown (2%)

How Much Is My Speeding Accident Claim Worth?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the organization that conducts crash tests, explains that increasing speeds increase the risk of crashes and the severity of crash injuries in four basic ways:
- Higher speed increases the distance a vehicle travels between the driver’s recognition of an impending hazard and when the driver reacts.
- As speed increases, the distance required for the vehicle to stop after the driver applies the brakes gets longer.
- Speed increases the risk that an evasive steering maneuver will result in loss of control of the vehicle.
- As speed increases, it exponentially increases the violent forces expended by the impact of a crash. For example, when impact speed increases from 40 to 60 mph (a 50% increase), the energy transferred upon impact increases by 125%.
At high speeds, the force of impact in a crash can be so severe that the structure of the vehicle collapses into the passenger compartment instead of protecting the driver and passengers. At very high speeds, airbags and safety belts cannot protect occupants from impacts causing severe injury, the IIHS says.
